    3. The Path of Inquiry...
All research is a process of understanding how events relate to one another. The events can be microscopic processes within a single cell or it can be patterns across the universe. Action research takes place at the social level. The events explored are between and among people, in places, and through community and culture practices. In action research one studies activity systems around complex problems and tries to understand the effect of intentional efforts to influence change. And not just any change, but change that aims to moves things forward to a better alignment with shared values of the participants.

    Tutorial 2: Understanding Action Research
Action research is a form of deep inquiry into one’s practice that involves acting to address issues or problems followed by a systematic process for learning from the results of your actions. The action researcher intentionally introduces iterative cycles of change into a social system and, working closely with others, analyzes any transformations to the system, reflects on the process, and shares these understandings with others. Common to most, if not all, approaches to action research is the assumption that understanding is grounded in experience coupled with an analytic approach to evidence followed by reflective integration.

    An Open Online Course
Action research is a process of deep inquiry into one's practices with others with the goal of evolving a deeper understanding of patterns of change. It involves taking action and collecting data to analyze and understand the actions from the perspectives of others and in relationship to a projected outcome. It is cyclic as the researcher moves through a stages of thoughtful planning of the action, taking action, then analyzing evidence collected to make sense of the action. One cycle is linked to the next by a phase of critical reflection on what was learned. The reflection often results in conceptual tools for planning the next actions. As one progresses through cycles, there is a continuous process of refining methods, making new decisions about data collection and evolving strategies for data interpretation.
