I have had papers riped up in front of me by teachers who thought this was a good way to teach me to be more careful. And other teachers who encouraged my creative explorations.  In graduate school one of my professors recognized the unusual patterns of the errors I made and helped explain why I have more trouble than others being "careless."   He suggested I find an editor to help with problems.   I came to understand that the underlying cause of my creativity and carelessness were linked.  My brain worked a bit differently to get past what were embarrassing errors.  This resulted in in making connections across categories. This personal experience made realize that we all have things that we do well and things that will challenge us. Some challenges are visible but many are less obvious.  Understanding our strengths and weaknesses and exploring the way we learn is a great personal quest which could be encouraged in school.  We focus on cognitive skills but rarely help students with important metacognitive skills.  We want students to learn, but we rarely have them learn about how they learn and understand what excites them and maybe even why. So I value giving each student more choice and control over their learning and then to try to understand the choices they make.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
